COURSE OBJECTIVES
· To understand the structure System concepts, applications, feasibilities, scope and limitations of technologically advanced systems and techniques. (No detailed designs mathematical calculations or derivation of formulae are needed.).
LEARNING OUTCOME
- Emphasis shall be laid on learning by doing, such as by making of 3-D models(to give the student different spatial experience).
COURSE CONTENTS:
UNIT 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF STRUCTURES
- What is a Structure
- How materials combine to form a structure
- Use of Structures to cover spaces
- Components of A structure
- How different components in Structure resist forces
- Types of Structures
UNIT 2: BEHAVIOUR OF MATERIALS UNDER LOADS:
- Types of Loads / Forces
- How materials resist forces acting on them
UNIT 3: TYPES OF STRUCTURE SYSTEMS
- Cellular structure system
- Bulk Active Structure System
- Form Active Structure System
- Vector Active Structure System
- Surface Active Structure System
- High rise Structure System
UNIT 4: CELLULAR SYSTEM
- Cell As A Natural Unit Of Space
- Cell Transformation
- Application Of Cellular Systems In Buildings
- Polyhedrality in Architecture
- Polygonal Cellular Systems leading to Space Frames & Geodesic Domes
- The Structural Morphology Of Basic Poly Hedra
- Tensegrity
UNIT 5: MATERIALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES
- Basic Construction Materials
Mud, Clay & Sand,
Timber, Bamboo,
Masonry (Stone & Brick)
Metals (Iron, Aluminum, Copper, Zinc Etc)
- Additives & Composite Building Materials
Lime, Cement Gypsum & Ceramics
Composite Metals (Brass, Steel, Concrete, RCC Etc)
Boards, Ply woods, Laminates etc.
- New Age Building Materials
Plastics, PVC, Silicone Carbon Fibers etc
- Glass and Pottery
- Fabrics
PEADEGOGY
· The lectures by the experts in the field will be arranged for the students so as to give them exposure to the practical aspects construction materials and how they combine to cover space.
· The emphasis should be given to actual working on materials, making of models and studying their behavior under forces / loads.
